As many of you know, Tuesday, January 12, 2010, Haiti was hit by a devastating 7.0 earthquake. This earthquake is the largest disaster in the western hemisphere in the last 200 years. Most of Port-Au-Prince (the capitol city of Haiti) was destroyed, and there has been tremendous loss of life and property throughout the entire country. The magnitude of destruction is still unfolding but we can be sure of this - this is a time when the body of Christ has an opportunity to stand up and engage a need by shining the light of hope and the love of Jesus in Haiti.
I am asking the church to participate in prayer and fasting efforts on behalf of the people of Haiti.
Here are some ways you can get involved immediately
Pray
We want to encourage everyone to pray for those affected, pray for those responding to the need, pray about how God would have you get involved.
Give financially to support the relief efforts.
Ruthanne Garlock, one of Tree of Life’s Ministering Elders, is a Board Member of Christian Haitian Outreach (CHO). CHO is an organization that supports the children, orphans and the poor of Haiti. More information can be found at www.christianhaitianoutreach.org on CHO.
If you wish to donate a gift to the CHO you can do so on our website here.
Additional organizations that we are recommending financial support be directed to are Samaritan's Purse, led by Franklin Graham and Hand of Hope (Joyce Meyer Ministries).
We have great confidence that you can trust what you give to these organizations will be stewarded well to help the people of Haiti.
The problems Haiti is facing will not go away in a couple of weeks. In this moment, the body of Christ must work together to engage the profound needs. We must demonstrate the love of our Savior as we respond when these people are suffering. We must bring hope. Together, we can make a huge difference in this tragic situation.
